It’s kinda boring to just post a bunch of interesting links I saw recently, but I have a few good ones saved up, so here we go.
First, something inspirational. This is an article I read when I picked up a magazine for the plane ride to my honeymoon a few months ago. For those of you who like running, I hope you find it inspiring too. Born to Run (Discover magazine, May 06). Doesn’t that make you feel like top-of-the line machinery? (at least by design–maybe not in your current operating condition). Shared it with Nate & Fred.. makes us want to go hunting for some gazelles or antelope or something as a three-man team. No more complaining about it being too hot outside to run (unless you’re a cheetah whose rectal thermometer is reading over 105F). The print version of this article was better though.. it included this awesome photo of a sprinter worthy of a Gatorade commercial (action shot, muscles flexed, beads of sweat all over) and little arrows pointing at all the cool anatomical features.
Next, something faux-inspirational. A few of us watched Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan the other day. In the spirit of jesting at Kirk & his crew, I present these motivational posters. I particularly like your last battlefield and expendability and “James T. Kirk”…

In other news (though this is over two years old), Osama bin Laden has been found (according to The Onion). We’ve just been looking in the wrong places the whole time.
That’s all for now.

I’m experiencing peer pressure to do one of those “top ten” lists that tend to zip around people’s blogs. I’ve never been one to do those, mostly because it requires too much thought (I’m not the kind of guy who can easily spout them out quickly). Here’s an attempt.
Top ten simple pleasures?
- Running on a really hot day, going into the shower, and the really funky feeling of cold water hitting the top of my head, but only warm/hot water running down my face. That’s some crazy fast heat transfer. And it keeps going for the whole length of the shower. That’s some crazy heat capacity. Anyone else find this to be a cool feeling?
- um.. can’t think of much else.
Actually, one thing I was thinking about the other day with much amusement was how many different euphemisms there are for moving one’s bowels. Actually, the thing that was interesting to me as I was thinking about it was how I use different euphemisms with different people, and the especially creative ones become a special part of our friendship somehow. I bet I could list ten of those here. I’ll list them as endings to the sentence “I gotta go ____”.
- “sit” - though this makes more sense for men than women
- “#2″ - boring, but it should be mentioned. Not boring if combined with Austin Powers references.
- “spin a pellet” - mostly with Andrew. Comes from our bio lab days (the converse would be to “aliquot the supernatant”).
- “make a deposit” - mostly with Andrew again
- “drop anchor” - some old high school friends
- “drop a big one” - Fred
- “drop it like it’s hot”
- “rule [my kingdom]” - the Shins
- “pinch a loaf” - not really something I see used often, unless we had just been watching Shawshank
- “take a dump” - the funny thing about this one was how often it was used by my database professor at MIT, who seemed to completely forget that the phrase gets used for anything other than describing tape backups of databases. “… every once in a while you have to take the database offline, if, for example, you need to take a dump or something.” [students look at each other confused as prof keeps going on]
There, I just created a new type of list that will sweep the blogosphere within hours! I “tag” all you people who do this kind of thing for fun.
I think “rule” is the most creative, though I think “drop anchor” evokes the strongest imagery (and especially sounds).
I hope I have satisfied the peer pressure.

CCFC retreat at Mt. Monadnock this past weekend. Complete w/Korean BBQ. Experimentation with underexposure and spotlights. Critiques welcome. What does #1 make you feel? Does #2 (as a photo) succeed in what it tries to do? Is Basil a sexy beast?

i think i’m most proud of the fans… makes you want to be a fan too.
no need to hate the refs… it’s more honorable to see how people conduct themselves in the face of injustice. espn2 may have been showing the images of shocked and mourning koreans at the end of the game, but what you could hear on tv was different: the korean songs and chants, just as strong as they were at the beginning of the game. isn’t that part of what “pilsung” means?
going away for the weekend, see y’alls later!
